Our 2000 Campus Improvement Plan assessed the design of the existing campus—its character, condition and maintenance. As one of the most selective and respected universities in the nation, Wake Forest proclaimed that the quality of its physical environment must live up to this high standard. Therefore, the overall goal for this Plan was simple: In five years, Wake Forest University would be one of the most beautiful campuses in America.

One of the first projects we designed after the completion of the Plan was the renovation of the Quad, the most important space on campus. Through overuse, the historic center of this prestigious institution had become run down, with deteriorating concrete walks, poor drainage and tree loss. Now, this main space has an oval walk with a distinctive brick pattern, new trees and improved drainage.

Another important project was the Maintenance and Management Plan. We assessed the Landscape Division, prepared a long-range arboricultural program to preserve major trees, simplified the numerous planting beds on campus and set standards for plant and lawn care.
