The Details

The 72-acre US Naval Observatory lies along Massachusetts Avenue in the scenic northwest corner of Washington, DC. Among its many facilities is the most famous, the Vice President’s residence, a nineteenth century country home in the Queen Anne style.

The main goals of the plan were to ensure screening from the outside perimeter, removal of hazardous trees and preservation of those trees that have the potential for a long lifespan. In all, over 1,000 trees were inventoried and mapped in a Geographic Information System (GIS).

As consultants to Klavon Design Associates, Inc., we then assessed each tree according to its age, location and condition. From this information, we were able to prepare a long-range management plan for the most important trees.
