Two hundred year old Hampden-Sydney College is one of the best examples of early American campus planning. After completing a general campus assessment and improvement plan in 1989, we were selected to plan and design numerous campus improvements over the ensuing years.
In 1989, one of the most troubling aspects of the institution was the dominance of cars in the central campus. To restore the central green and make a walkable campus, our Plan proposed relocating extensive parking lots to more remote yet convenient locations and replacing the roads with paths for both walkers and bicyclists. The construction of the new student center/cafeteria in the heart of campus also served to reinforce the historic core of the campus.
In more recent years we have provided comprehensive recommendations to preserve the major trees on the campus and site designs residential complexes, parking lots and trail systems. Just this year, we completed an updated Tree Conservation Plan.
