The Central Mall lies at the heart of the UD campus and is its most important outdoor space. Surrounded by classroom buildings, residence halls and the Kennedy Student Union, the 7-acre Mall is both crossroads and gathering space.
When UD decided to raze its outdated mechanical engineering building, it used the opportunity to completely rebuild the adjacent Mall and the surrounding portions of the campus. The central feature of the project is a 500-foot, sloping lawn bordered by low seat walls of native limestone. A terraced amphitheater will be built into a steep hill at one end and large plaza at the other, beside the Student Union. Surrounding driveways will be converted to pedestrian avenues and a state-of-the-art stormwater garden will grace the main lawn’s south edge.
